Senior Vice President of Captive and Safety Management Operations
Michael Sutherland is an experienced Commercial Insurance Broker, Risk Management Consultant and Senior Vice President with HMS Insurance Associates, Inc.. Mike has an extensive background with insurance company, brokerage, captive and management operations. Mike started his career with UF&G Insurance as a corporate trainee in 1995. In 1999 he joined HMS Insurance Associates, Inc. as a Commercial Insurance Broker. Mike has spent the last 27 years working with clients to lower insurance costs and protect assets by utilizing his expertise as a commercial Insurance Broker, Captive Insurance Specialist and Risk Management Consultant. Mike has earned the title of Senior Vice President of Captive and Safety Management Operations.
Magnus Turesson
Risk Control Director
Magnus Turesson joined HMS in 2006 as the agency expanded to include its own Risk Control Director. Magnus brings a wealth of knowledge to educate and advise our clients on how to control their risks and losses. Prior to HMS, Magnus was the Claims/Loss Control Manager for a large Maryland based construction contractor and a construction/manufacturing company. Magnus holds a Bachelor of Science in Occupational/Environmental Safety and Health from the University of Michigan as well as numerous certificates in health and construction safety. Magnus has completed a number of OSHA training courses and has earned a Safety Certificate in Construction Safety.
John Stelma
Senior Risk Control Consultant
John holds a BS in Safety Science from Indiana University of PA (IUP). John has 30 years of service as a safety professional. John served as a safety & training coordinator for 3 years with a clothing manufacturer, 10 as a safety manager for a large utility, road & bridge contractor and 5 years as a Safety & HR manager with a communications contractor performing underground & aerial fiber optic installation. Prior to joining HMS in 2014, John served 9 years as a risk management consultant with Hartford Insurance specializing in Auto & fleet safety, Business contingency planning, WC, GL & Property. Clients included construction contractors, county governments, private education, real estate and manufacturers. John is an authorized OSHA construction trainer and a NSC- forklift, basic rigging and CPR & FA trainer.
